Building Hope For Every Paw

For over 50 years, Glacial Lakes Humane Society and Shelter has cared for the dogs, cats, and small animals of Northeast South Dakota. Our current building is a repurposed structure from the 1970s — we’ve outgrown it. It’s time to build a facility that matches the size of our mission.

Our animal shelter exists because pets need people and people need pets. Supporters strive to create a community where all pets are loved and their impact upon their humans creates happier, healthier lives for both pets and people.

For over 50 years the Glacial Lakes Humane Society and Shelter has worked in Northeast South Dakota to care for dogs, cats, and other small animals while finding them fur-ever homes.

Why We’re Building New

A Building That’s Been Asking for Retirement

Our current shelter has served the community since the 1970s. It has run out of room, and it’s starting to work against the animals it was built to help.

Current Facility Since the 1970s
  • Repurposed structure used by GLHSS since the 1970s.
  • Disjointed floorplan results in inefficiencies for staff, crowding of animals, and no ability to completely separate dogs and cats.
  • Inadequate plumbing and drainage results in labor-intensive animal care.
  • HVAC and electrical systems are antiquated.
  • Animal quarantine capacity is inadequate for need.
  • No dedicated space for providing animal medical care and minor surgical procedures.
  • Minimal outdoor space for dogs.
New Facility Proposed
  • Located south of the Watertown Walmart, with increased kennel capacity and separate areas for small dogs and puppies.
  • Cat community rooms with ample space for visitors.
  • Dedicated space for animal medical care.
  • Larger capacity for quarantined animals and extensive outdoor exercise areas for dogs.
  • Lobby with seating and various spaces to complete adoption paperwork.
  • Up-to-date HVAC and plumbing to facilitate a safe, sanitary environment.
  • Meet and greet rooms for animals and prospective owners to interact.

The Plan

A Facility Designed Around Animal Welfare

Every room in the new building was planned around one question: what does this animal need to heal, feel safe, and get adopted? The layout separates dogs, cats, and quarantined animals completely, and finally gives our medical care its own dedicated space.
